What Do I Do When My Mother, Father or Grandparents Pass Away?

Probate in Brevard County, Florida

Losing a loved one is never easy.  The most important thing to handle upon the death of your mom, dad, grandmother, or grandfather is to take care of the family, the funeral arrangements, and ensure for your own mental health.

A week or two after the funeral make a call to an attorney to discuss the deceased person’s assets and debts and what responsibilities family members have.  For example many people believe they must pay their deceased family member’s bills.  This is not necessarily true.  There are usually only a few, very specific occasions that need intervention immediately.

Tips from Rhoden Law Group: Here in Brevard, the Melbourne area, it is usually important to make arrangements for the power bill to be paid if there is no surviving spouse to make the payments.  The power company here will shut off the service as soon as it is discovered that their customer died.

When you call Rhoden Law Group you can ask questions and schedule a consultation for a complete review.  Things you will need to cover with the attorney are:

  • How do I know what assets my family member had?
  • When do I have to file the Last Will, if I have to file it at all?
  • Where do I find the Will and What if it is in a safe deposit box?
  • Do I need Probate?   Which type of Probate do I need?
  • What are the responsibilities of a Personal Representative?
  • Should I petition the court to be the Personal Representative?

There are many other questions that will come up and your Legal-Eagles attorney will provide you many details during your meeting that you need to know to make the best decisions about your relative’s estate.

Call today to schedule a review of your own planning documents so your family will have everything they need should you be faced with incapacity, end of life decisions or unexpected death.  Your family will thank you if you help them minimize the impact of Probate and your paperwork is in order.
